After her training, Melissa went on to open Sweet Melissa’s Café on Sanibel Island. For 15 years, it became a beloved dining destination. With the support of a loyal investor and a devoted community, the restaurant thrived. Melissa developed a strong following, cultivated a talented team, and cemented her reputation as one of the region’s premier chefs.

Sanibel wasn’t just a business location—it was home. But then came Hurricane Ian.

The Devastation of Hurricane Ian

Melissa had lived through Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, losing her home during that storm. But the destruction of Sweet Melissa’s by Hurricane Ian was different. This time, it wasn’t just her home, it was her livelihood.

Walking into the restaurant after the storm was heartbreaking. Water lines marked the walls. Fish were literally found in the dining room. The building had suffered damage beyond repair, and Melissa had no choice but to close the doors permanently.

Finding a Way to Rebuild

Despite the loss, Melissa wasn’t ready to give up. With her husband by her side, she searched for a way to bring Sweet Melissa’s back to life. After considering rebuilding on Sanibel, another round of storms—Hurricanes Milton and Helene—added further setbacks. Instead, she found a restaurant space near HealthPark in Fort Myers, just two miles from her home.

It was the perfect turnkey location. With determination, Melissa and her husband emptied their savings, took a chance on themselves, and managed to open the new Sweet Melissa’s in just two months. They launched on April 1, bringing a taste of Sanibel to Fort Myers.

From day one, the response was overwhelming. Loyal Sanibel customers traveled to the new location, eager to support Melissa and enjoy her cooking again. The menu stayed true to the dishes that made Sweet Melissa’s famous, proving that while the building had changed, the heart of the restaurant had not.

Melissa describes the journey as a testament to the spirit of Southwest Florida—neighbors supporting each other, businesses rebuilding, and communities coming together after disaster.

Melissa’s story isn’t just one of resilience, but also of recognition. In 2019, she was named a semifinalist for “Best Chef: South,” an honor she likens to the Academy Awards of the culinary world. The nomination validated years of hard work and her creative dedication to the kitchen.

The first is her fish stew—an aromatic blend with a chorizo, tomato, and saffron base, filled with local snapper, redfish, mussels, clams, shrimp, and scallops, all topped with a flavorful Pernod aioli. It’s one of her most requested dishes and a permanent fixture on the menu.

The second is her goat cheese cheesecake, topped with local honey and pistachios. Inspired by her daughter’s love of cheesecake, Melissa perfected her own version, which quickly became a fan favorite.
